Name: Elias Bishop
Gender: Male
Alignment: Neutral-Light
Age: 40
Species: Human
Class: Wizard
Appearance:
Elias has a fairly common face. His is just as round as any regular passerby on the street with a slightly defined jawline and prominent cheekbones under a thick and close-trimmed beard. His intelligent, ice blue eyes are spaced evenly apart between a long and sharp nose, the sort perfect for holding a pair of reading glasses. Elias’ hair is a chestnut brown and of medium length, curling just barely at the edges.
Due to his somewhat scholarly nature, Elias likes to dress the part. As such, he most often wears well-pressed dress pants which are tailored to a straight fit around his legs and matched with an almost perfectly tailored vest and dress shirt. Though Elias’ chosen research requires him to also be constantly on the move, so he tends towards wearing a pair of worn and comfortable travelling boots rather than dress shoes and often finds himself habitually wearing a midnight-blue blue travelling cloak with specks of silver.
Personality:
Elias is a scholar at heart and, as such, he tries his best to maintain the appearance of an intelligent and inquisitive individual. Silently talking and thinking to himself while poring over tome after tome or recording entries into one of his many journals while also maintaining a reasonable level of manners in the presence of his fellows. He even goes so far as to wear a pair of fake glasses to help characterize himself.
Try as he might to fit that stereotype, Elias finds himself reverting quickly back into a good-humored man always ready to crack a joke. Even in situations where it’s not humorous, a particularly successful study session or the accurate recording of new and accurate information is easily enough to plaster a near-constant grin to his face which looks as though he just thought of a funny joke and refused to tell anyone else about it. Whenever he’s alone, Elias finds himself obsessively balancing magical equations, reading tomes, and performing other forms of research as though he had unlimited child-like energy. Catch him in the right mood, and Elias could quite literally be bouncing off the walls with extreme focus and joy towards whatever he’s doing.
Abilities:
Simply put, Elias is a wizard. The talents are moreso a side-product of his research than his being born with the power. Due to rigorous study, he is capable of casting spells from the majority of schools of magic which will be listed below. However, any spell Elias casts requires some sort of catalyst to function, such as a specially prepared wand or staff among other things. Runes, materials related to the spell, gemstones, vocal spells, hand motions, and any other object or action that could conceivably be used to cast a spell save for simple thought is enough to do so. Below are listed the schools of magic which Elias has some degree of proficiency in:
Illusion
This is Elias’ favorite school of magic and the one he considers himself an expert in. An illusion is a spell which manipulates any single or combination of the physical senses except for touch, though reaches its limits when attempting to cause physical damage. An illusion is only capable of manipulating other beings’ perception of things, it cannot change the nature of the things themselves. For example, a high level illusion spell could make a person see a bridge over a cavern and make it appear real to every sense, but it will not change the fact that there is no bridge and, as such, anyone trying to touch it will simply fall through.
Transmutation:
Elias’ go-to school for combat magic. Because of it’s relatively non-destructive nature, Elias prefers it greatly as a means of protecting his own research. This school is the magic of quickly changing the nature of objects, such as lighting a candle on fire or shaping bricks into spikes. Some other skills such as telekinesis even fall under this branch of magic since it is essentially changing the physical state of things in the sense that the spell is changing the object’s movement.
Conjuration:
Less so the summoning of *things* than it is the summoning if pure magical energies to create effects, such as using mystical energies to temporarily create a sword or a flight of stairs when the caster needs one. These spells can also take on a more metaphysical sense, such as the conjuration of an invisible magical webbing to alert the caster of things moving within. This school’s applications also only limited to the caster’s imagination, though the existence of any application is only as long as the caster is willing to put energy into the spell. As a result, many different types of defensive magics and wards are centered around the school of conjuration.
One of the most unique aspects to Conjuration is the construction of physical semi-planes that exist in the space between realms. This is the principle used for many objects with pocket dimensions inside of them. Elias extensively uses this to access a personal laboratory no larger than a cottage. It doubles as a place to sleep whenever he’s on the go.
Divination
The school of seeing and learning things that cannot normally be seen or learned. The most common applications of this magic are in discerning languages, speaking with animals, and scrying nearby areas.
Enchantment/Alchemy
Due to the similarity of both schools, Elias considers both Enchantment and Alchemy to be more-or-less under the same school since their principles center around creating magical substances and creating magical items, oftentimes with both working hand-in-hand. This sort of magic takes lots of time and preparation to complete to any satisfactory level. Due to this, any enchantment or alchemy performed requires a laboratory.
Evocation
The widely recognized school of pure destruction, Evocation revolves around using elemental magic to great, destructive effect. Elias absolutely despises this school of magic and does his best to avoid needing to apply it in any situation. As a result, he has a very limited understanding of the nature of Evocation except in the case of making things go BOOM.
Necromancy:
Elias dabbles little into what is universally considered to be the “dark arts”. Raising the dead, lichdom, and using the flames and other elements of un-life. Though not particularly enjoyable to practice, Elias has found himself with something of an academic fascination for the nature of the art and is especially curious how one comes about learning its powers, especially when it comes to lichdom, not that he would ever have an interest in becoming one himself
Equipment:
Starry Cloak: A specially enchanted travelling cloak that enables the wearer to ward off fatigue and move more quickly and dexterously. It takes the form of a midnight-blue travelling cloak specked with silver in the image of stars.
Bag of Holding: A bag with access to a pocket dimension in it which allows for the storage of a large amount of objects which wouldn’t rationally be able to fit in the bag.
Portable Door: A special device that gives Elias access to his pocket dimension. It takes the form of a doorframe that can be assembled and staked into the ground. It must be left up so Elias can cast the proper spell to access his personal pocket dimension.
History:
Elias spent the majority of his childhood surrounded by books. It wasn’t as though he was bullied or brushed aside as a child so much as the village he grew up in simply had a lack of children, but an abundance of books. He did get his fair share of playtime during childhood, but Elias always found himself drawn back to the comforting bookish scent of ink-scribbled parchment bound along leather spines between covers. The moment Elias learned to read, he became even more invested in spending his spare time under the guidance of Ethan, the kindly old librarian, who taught Elias of the wonders of ancient mythos and legends and the hard facts within scientific tomes. He even went so far as to teach Elias the very basics of magic.
Years passed and Elias’ attentiveness to books rose and fell with varying years. He eventually reached an age where he was old and talented enough to leave his home village and explore the world. Scrounging up whatever money he could from odd jobs and savings, Elias drifted from town to town, city to city, grazing through whatever libraries he could find and recording his favorite discoveries in a small collection of journals he carried with him.
As Elias’ knowledge grew, so did his magical power. He started using it to some degree, mostly to act in his own sense of justice wherever he saw fit. With liberal application of Evocation, Elias felt as though he helped many a town with bandit problems and the like. THough one day, he underestimated the extent of his powers and conjured a blast of lightning which killed a family of villagers he was trying to protect from a small horde of zombies. He swore off ever using evocation or especially destructive magics again.
Once again, somewhere along Elias’ travels, he stumbled upon the theories of creating pocket dimensions. He had encountered such devices before, but was at a loss on how to create them. He immediately put the theories to work and assembled an alchemical reactor which would create enough magical power to sustain the small pocket dimension which eventually became his portable laboratory.
True to his nature, Elias constantly bounces around the realms in search of ever greater knowledge and adventure wherever he can find it, regardless of whether it brings him pain or fortune.
